Helping Players Master Basic Free Throw Shooting Techniques to Improve Performance and Consistency
Becoming an exceptional free throw shooter starts with focus. Players must block all distractions as they approach the free throw line, which is easier said than done. Justin teaches breathing techniques and provides tips on maintaining composure during free throw attempts.
Players learn to align their body properly at the free throw line, squaring their body, with their feet shoulder-width apart and placing their toes the appropriate number of inches behind the free throw line to avoid violations. They also learn to position their elbows correctly, keeping them close to the body to increase leverage and improve the shot.
As a former collegiate and professional basketball player, Justin is familiar with the right momentum and technique needed for precise free throw shooting. He has also taught the techniques at various basketball camps. Justin’s basketball training history and experience as a teacher, coach, and camp counselor throughout Bergen County, New Jersey makes him a highly effective private basketball coach. Coaching in small groups allows Justin to adapt techniques to your child’s personal style of play.
Teaching Players Through Various Free Throw Shooting Drills
Free throw shooting drills play a key role in improving players’ performance at the free throw line. They help players refine their shooting technique, develop consistency, and handle the pressure of making free throws in the crucial "game on the line" moments that matter. Regular free throw practice gives players an edge in a crucial skill, regardless of the level at which the player competes.
At Clutch Basketball Training, players will practice a number of free throw shooting drills, including the following:
- Swish, where the player shooting starts on 5 and must get to 10, getting 1 point for every swish and losing 1 point for every miss.
- Plus/Minus, which has the same rules as swish except players don’t need to swish the shot.
- In-A-Row, where the goal is to make a certain number of shots in a row within a certain amount of time.
- Baseline free throws, where each player in a group goes to the free-throw line 1-by-1 to make a free throw.
Apart from these free throw shooting drills, players also participate in team competition drills where they practice free throw shooting in a realistic game-like environment.
